On the 9th of August 2019, as from 4:30pm to 6:30pm, the Building Information Modelling (BIM) talk held in the UoN towers room 404 by CoRE Awards in partnership with ESA was an event few could afford to miss. The theme of the talk was Technology in Construction and the chief guest was the Regional Marketing Director for Autodesk, Peter Ongeri. A group from of 4 (professionals and student ambassadors), 2 from BIM (Building Information Modelling) Africa and 2 from Autodesk were present and did their presentations followed by an interacting session between the students and the professionals.
The session begun with a presentation from Core Award followed by ESA.
The BIM Africa ambassadors who are former students of the University of Nairobi from School of Engineering and School of Built Environment specifically doing their presentations. This was an informative session as we all got to learn that the most important aspect is not the modelling aspect in building but rather the information that is presented or delivered.
During Autodesk’s presentation, students got to learn how the various software availed by Autodesk can be used to aid construction. The integration of various software was also discussed and how best they can complement each other to give out the best output in terms of design.
The Regional Marketing Director, Mr Peter Ongeri outlined the fact that the software is available free of charge to students for a period of three years and also available free to tutors. This was particularly great to hear since most students are normally limited but the inability to purchase this software and hence do not get to learn design early enough. Autodesk Kenya had also rolled out an important campaign for teaching tutors how to best use their products, a knowledge which can be transferred to students over the years churning out highly reliable professional designers. The program was rolled out in JKUAT and UoN is scheduled for early next year, 2020.
