- In three words how would you describe VoSpine?
Connecting same-interest individuals
- What made you to think of creating VoSpine?
There exists a very big gap between people with same interests as at now and our main aim is to bridge that gap. For instance, how can an engineering student from The University of Nairobi interact and share ideas with those from JKUAT or MOI or even Harvard and MIT? How can such a student meet practicing engineers? Do we really have a global and open platform where all lovers of business meet to share business ideas or where fashionisters meet to showcase their fashion? No, we do not and that’s why we started working on a platform that will answer all the above questions. The need to have a platform that brings together people with similar interests without limitations prompted us to create VoSpine.
- What distinguishes VoSpine from other social media sites? How does VoSpine work?
First of all VoSpine is not a social media site so I wouldn’t say anything that distinguishes it from the social media sites. VoSpine is a networking site for all categories of people who want to meet others with whom they share the same interests. To that extent, if you had asked me to distinguish VoSpine from other networking sites, I would say that unlike them, we care so much about people interacting with people who share a common goal in life with them. As I always ask, “Why would an engineer share engineering stuff to a doctor who knows nothing and is not even interested in knowing the stuff?” We want a community that appreciates the need for online networking and that can only happen of the time they spend networking online is substantial; such a time can only be substantial if spent with people you are in the same boat with and that’s the unique thing that we offer: we allow you to shy away from all the inconsequential and childish updates and all the updates that might have irritated you but only channel to you those that interest you. Additionally, we do not impose restrictions to your community like it’s done elsewhere through friending and following others. Once you join a VoSpine Channel, you are already interacting with all the members of that channel. You not only benefit from the updates from others (which could be opportunities, events, tips or any other update) but also get real time news from around the world concerning your interests. Working of VoSpine: To use VoSpine, you will first need to create an account using your email address, a username and a password through the link http://www.vospine.com With your account, all you need to do is join channels that correspond to your interests and that’s it, you can start spining (sharing information with fellow spiners).
- Your hobbies?
I like programming (I do it both professionally and it’s also a hobby), reading and computer games. Whenever I’m free, I spend most of the time reading news especially business news and technology news from sites like The New York Times, Business Insider, The Entrepreneur, The Engineer, CNET and The Hacker News. Just like any other 21-year old college student, I also play computer games like FIFA and LIMBO because they have the unique ability to open my thinking and co-ordination both of which are very crucial for a programmer in addition to entertaining me and relaxing my mind.
- Where do you see VoSpine in two years?
I am very visionary and positive about VoSpine. In the next two years we will be a tech giant and our main plan is to be operational not just in Kenya but the whole world, having millions of users.
- If you were to be born an animal, which animal would you prefer?
If I were to be reincarnated then a tiger would be my choice. I like its patience and precision.
- As a programmer and a Web Developer/Designer as well as a student, what are your biggest challenges?
As a student, the main challenge becomes balancing the work of platform maintenance and class-work. As you can see, VoSpine is constantly under improvement and every day we receive feedback from users who are always telling us what we should improve on or what they feel isn’t good or working properly and as the developer, I have to attend to them as fast as possible (with aid of my friend and co-founder Sidney Rema on the user interface side). I do the management of all the servers (database server, mail server and apache server) and at times I get calls while in class that a server has gone down and I have to attend to it as soon as possible yet also ensuring that I attend the lectures and read my notes!
- Describe color red to a blind man
A blind man cannot see and can only believe. To describe color red, I’d tell him it’s the color of his blood.
- How do you manage your business as well as academics?
I have daily plans on what to do both on academics and on the platform. Balancing is the key to ensuring that I do not infringe on either of them since at the end of the day, I need to earn my degree and VoSpine also has to prosper. What I do is to ensure that I eliminate some parts of social life, stay up late (like right now it’s 2.05 am at night) and wake up very early so as to increase my working hours. In so doing, I have ample time to attend to both VoSpine and academics.
- Apart from VoSpine, do you have any other venture?
VoSpine isn’t my first tech startup. I started with Estudykenya when I was 19 years old but then, it wasn’t very successful. The idea of VoSpine was already in our minds at the time I was working on Estudykenya (last year 2014) and when I dropped Estudykenya, I started working on another platform which unfortunately had all its data wiped out after completion when my computer hard disk failed and so we decided to start working on VoSpine on May of this year and this is how far we have reached. I am currently giving all my attention to VoSpine and run no other “big” business apart from the normal small businesses at home.
- Why did the chicken cross the road?
A chicken cannot cross the road! Perhaps a hen can!
- Have you engaged any prominent persons in VoSpine
VoSpine already has professionals signed up to our various channels and these include doctors, engineers and great business moguls in this country. We even have accounts with people outside Kenya and are already global! They all are waiting to interact with anyone who signs up to the various channels as they enjoy this incredible experience.
- Who is your competitor?
Our main competition comes from the general online networking industry where we have Facebook, Twitter and Reddit. However, it’s worth noting that all the three sites can co-exist with VoSpine without any competition since what a user gets from VoSpine cannot be found in Facebook or Twitter which makes us to have ideally no competition.
- Do you know how to drop an egg on the floor without cracking it?
It’s simple. Drop it slowly from a height of 1cm and it won’t crack!
